Message from the President
Welcome to summer! We had an exciting State of the City event last month where Mayor Joe Vinatieri shared with us his excitement for the new businesses that are coming and have already opened in Whittier. The newest business that will be coming soon at Whittier Crossings is Grub Burger Bar. Whittier will be the second location on the West Coast. They currently have one in San Diego. Last year Joe shared about what was coming and this year they are here! He talked about the homes that have been built and the apartments on Whittier and Catalina. The reason for the delay in building was that they were hit hard during the rains and had a mold issue that had to be dealt with. They are now fast tracking the completion of this complex. Has everyone seen how fast Chick-Fil-A is being built? Mark your calendars for August 17th! It is going to be a wonderful addition to the Whittwood Towne Center. The owner, Thomas Purtell, has worked diligently in finding the best location in Whittier for his second Chick-Fil-A!
Jeff Collier our City Manager also gave a report on our city and how we are doing. It was very informative. We have added two more police officers and have a new MET team in place to assist with the homeless in our area. Jeff and Joe both talked about how our city is working with organizations to come up with a solution and not blame others. Jeff mentioned that there are several sub-populations in our community included the mentally ill, substance abuse, victims of spousal abuse, those priced out of the house market and more. This is an ongoing problem and there will be more talk about solutions coming up in future articles. He encouraged us all to get involved with Neighborhood Watch and Business Watch Whittier to be part of the solution.
The Whittier Chamber has many events that are happening during the month of July. I want to invite everyone to come out to our Shop Local Community Expo at Parnell Park on July 20th from 4-7 pm where we are partnering with the City of Whittier Concerts in the Park series. The Expo will have a carnival theme this year with businesses featuring fun games at their booth to be played by all family members. This is an amazing opportunity to market your business to our Whittier community.
We have a new event sponsored by Friendly Hills Bank and Biola University this year on July 26 at 7:30 am. It is a mid-season Economic Forecast and the guest speak is Dr. Christopher Thornberg, Founding Partner, Beacon Economics and Director, UC Riverside School of Business Center for Economic Forecasting. Check out the Chamber’s website to register.
One more exciting new event that the City of Whittier has planned is “Walk & Roll” on July 16, 2017 from 10 am – 2 pm in Uptown Whittier. The Chamber will have a booth along with many other businesses in Whittier so be sure to come with your walking shoes, bikes or strollers and have a great day in Uptown. Stop by our booth and pick up your I Love Whittier and Whittier Strong buttons.
