Small businesses and organizations are vital to our community because of the jobs they provide to our residents, the sales tax they generate, and the services that they provide which are critical to the public.

The City of Whittier, Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce, Business & Economic Recovery Taskforce, and Whittier Uptown Association have partnered to create the Whittier Relief Fund to assist Whittier small business owners who have been financially impacted by COVID-19.

Grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis based on eligibility standards in the application.

Criteria:
Grants ranging from $500-$2,500 will be offered to eligible businesses meeting the following criteria:

  • Must have a valid City of Whittier business license
  • Must have a brick and mortar location in the City of Whittier
  • Must be independently owned and operated
  • Must either provide personal care services (hair, nail, massage, tattoo, tanning) OR generate sales tax revenue in the City of Whittier

Grants will be awarded based on:

  • Type of business industry
  • Annual gross taxable revenue up to $1.25M

Use of funds:
Funds can be used for general operations and overhead such as payroll expenses, supplier payments, rent or mortgage, PPE, and/or sanitation supplies for the workplace.

Who is eligible to apply for this grant?

Small businesses and restaurants located and licensed in the City of Whittier that have been financially impacted due to county & state restrictions, and are independently owned & operated, are eligible for the Whittier Relief Grant.

My business is not a restaurant. Can I still apply?

Yes, this grant is aimed at supporting both restaurants and small businesses located and licensed in Whittier.

How much money is the grant award?

This grant will be awarded based on the business’ annual gross taxable sales.

Grants will be allocated in amounts ranging between $500-$2,500 based on eligibility criteria.

What can the grant award be used for?

This grant is intended to provide financial relief to small businesses and restaurants located in the City of Whittier. Grant money may be used for equipment and improvements related to COVID compliance, operating expenses such as rent, mortgage, payroll, supplies, and/or employee retention.

My business is located in the unincorporated area of Whittier, am I still eligible?

No. This grant is only for small businesses and restaurants (no chains) that are physically located within the City of Whittier boundary.

Can I apply if I have received other sources of funding such as the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) or Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL)?

Yes. Regardless of prior funding that you have received (including the Whittier Small Business COVID Compliant Grant and the Unity in the Uptown Community Grant), if you meet the eligibility requirements listed, you can apply.

I received a Whittier COVID Compliant Grant already, can I apply for this one?

Yes. This Grant is intended to provide financial relief to all qualifying small businesses and restaurants. If you meet the eligibility requirements, even if you received a COVID Compliant Grant to offset your PPE-related costs, you may apply for this one.

I received a Unity in the Uptown Community Grant already, can I apply for this one?

Yes. This Grant is intended to provide financial relief to all qualifying small businesses and restaurants.

How often will applications be reviewed?

The Grant Review Committee will review submitted applications for eligibility in the grant program every week with the intent to get money in the hands of those who need it right away.

How are funds given away?

Applications will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis based on applicant eligibility. Applications will be awarded until funds are depleted.

How will I know if I am getting the grant?

The Grant Review Committee will send you a letter notifying you of your status and grant amount. All decisions of the Grant Review Committee will be final.

When will I receive grant money?

The Grant Review Committee will be working quickly to send checks out within 1 week of approval.

What do I need to do to apply?

If you believe your small business or restaurant is eligible, complete the application above.

What information do I need to gather to apply?

The application is very easy and basic. The only thing you’ll need to gather is your City of Whittier business license number.
